Madelyn Fernstrom, PhD, CNS, is senior advisor of Health Management for UPMC Health Plan. She is also professor of Psychiatry, Epidemiology and Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Fernstrom is a nationally recognized expert in the fields of appetite, weight control, and wellness. She is the NBC Today Show Diet and Nutrition Editor and is author of The Runner’s Diet and The Real You Diet. Dr. Fernstrom earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She served a fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

Greek Yogurt and a fresh fruit.

Favorite stress reliever:
Walking in a park or wooded area.

Favorite food indulgence:
Spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread

Favorite music to exercise to:
I like an eclectic mix. It depends on what I feel like at the moment! Some of my favorites are Beyonce, Dave Matthews Band, and Aerosmith.

Most surprising talent:
I’m a really good dancer – all types. I’ve won some competitions. (Dancing with the Stars, here I come! LOL).

Daily inspiration:
Do my best every day.

Biggest challenge:
Getting enough daily physical activity.

Favorite workout:
For a workout to be my favorite, it can’t seem like work. I don’t like the word “workout.” I exercise. Skiing, hiking, rollerblading — any activity that boosts energy appeals to me.
