Celebrate National Running Day

Celebrate National Running Day 2014 | UPMCMyHealthMatters.com

What’s the best way to celebrate National Running Day? You guessed it: Going for an awesome run, of course!!  Today, millions of runners all over the globe will be lacing up their shoes and heading out for runs of all lengths to celebrate running. Will you join us?

National Running Day is an opportunity for runners all over the world to share their passion for running. This special day began in 2009, when national running organizations worked together to celebrate annually on the first Wednesday of June. Because of those efforts, thousands of organizations and runners encourage others to join in by planning a run, sharing their passion for running, signing up for a race, running for charity, or setting a new goal.

Over the years I have talked to hundreds (possibly thousands) of runners. The reason people give for running that always sticks out for me: When people run they feel happy, healthy, and empowered to do and be more. I have to agree with that. I first started running as a middle-school track and field competitor; now I have worked up my confidence and tackled IRONMAN. Running has taught me some of the most important life lessons and how to keep going even when the going gets tough. Enough about me, though; let’s put the focus back on you! Here are my answers to some of the most common questions people ask me about running:

How can I get started?
I recommend being creative with your options. Try these ideas for joining in on National Running Day and getting others involved!

  • Take your run to work. Lace up your running shoes and, if your schedule permits, head outdoors for lunchtime run. Invite co-workers to join in on the fun and encourage new runners to get started.
  • Host a running hour. Instead of meeting your friends for happy hour after work, meet up for a running hour. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day and enjoy the great outdoors.
  • Runners’ day of service. Sign up to volunteer at a local charity run. There are so many events this time of year, and they are always in need of volunteers. Races would not be possible without the volunteers. It’s a great experience to be part of that!

How can I connect with runners around the country?
The best place to start is to visit RunningDay.org where you can get complete information about the day as well as look for information and events in your community. There are also tools for mapping, tracking, and other running related goodies.

What do you love about running?
My favorite part of running is the ability to do it anywhere. You can lace up anywhere and head out on the open road. It’s free and can be done at any pace and time of the day.
