Pittsburgh January 2018 Events

Monday, January 1 – New Year’s Resolution Hike

Have you made a resolution this year to get outdoors and get more exercise? Why not start right away with a steady-paced hike through beautiful Frick Park? We’ll hike 4-5 miles over hilly terrain, while admiring winter’s beauty from the trail. It’s the perfect beginning to a great new year!

Every Friday in January – Feel Good Fridays at the Warhol

In January 2018, the Andy Warhol Museum is bringing back its ever-popular Free Good Fridays with UPMC Health Plan as the presenting sponsor. Kick the winter blues with FREE public admission* from 5 to 10 p.m. every Friday throughout the month of January. Mingle with friends, take in the funky artwork of Andy Warhol and other artists, groove to hip vibes from a DJ, and sip tempting libations at the bar.

Saturday, January 6 – Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Kickoff Training Run

Jump-start your training with the annual DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Kick-off Training Run. It’s a full morning of fitness, friends, fun, food, and free stuff! Choose a distance (four, six, or eight miles) and then hang around for giveaways from favorites like NuGo, Brooks, Honey Stinger, GNC, UPMC Sports Medicine, and, of course, DICK’S!

Saturday, January 6 – Market District Cooking Class: Fit and Trim Healthy Substitutions

Learn to swap out unhealthy for healthy ingredients while maintaining satisfying flavors. Start your New Year off with a bang of taste and motivation.

Sunday, January 14 – Roaring Run Hike

Explore Roaring Run on this half day adventure. We’ll hike at a steady pace over 4-6 miles on moderate terrain. This hike is focused on learning a new area, enjoying the company of others and getting a great workout!

Saturday, January 20 – Indoor Adaptive Kayaking

Are you interested in learning to kayak? Venture Outdoors and the Children’s Institute have partnered to offer indoor kayaking workshops for individuals with physical limitations and an interest in flat-water kayaking. The 2.5 hour class for adults and/or youth is held in a heated pool and caters to the individual’s needs. Discover what modifications would help you to paddle outdoors. The level of difficulty for the workshop ranges from easy to advanced based on the ability of the participant.

Saturday, January 20 – Beginner Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an easy and low-impact way to get some exercise and fresh air during the winter. It’s as simple as walking but a lot more fun! Participants will learn to “float” across deep snow and easily access terrain that could challenge a hiker or cross-country skier. This trip will cover fewer miles than our moderate snowshoeing outings, with more time to rest and appreciate nature while enjoying the winter wonderland! Fee includes snowshoe rental.

Sunday, January 21 – 7th Annual Pittsburgh Yoga Expo

A day to celebrate wellness and mindfulness in Pittsburgh!  All are welcome to join in a day of inspiration and rejuvenation. From participating in yoga workshops to watching yoga demonstrations and learning more about the healing arts, this day will be dedicated to bring the local yoga and healing arts community together to share with the Pittsburgh community.

Tuesday, January 23 – Market District Cooking Class: Healthy Dishes with Chef Brandon Barragan

Join Chef Barragan as he helps you kick off your New Year with healthy dishes. As a personal chef for famous athletes, he will teach you how to power punch your recipes for a winning meal!

Saturday, January 27 – NFL Play 60 Training Camp

Parents and kids of all ages can wear their favorite jerseys and enjoy five floors of football-related activities, including a mini-NFL Combine with speed, accuracy, and agility drills; healthy cooking demos for team practice to tailgates in our Weisbrod Kitchen Classroom; a touchdown dance contest; and much more.

Sunday, January 28 – Southside Slopes 5K Tour

Work your legs with some uphill running through the South Side Slopes before working your arms with some climbing at ASCEND. You’ll start with some climbs, traverse some of the neighborhood’s city steps, find some old inclines, and end at ASCEND. There, you’ll have the option to get 50% off of a pass for the rest of the day. Don’t be intimidated—the run will be at a casual pace—all levels are welcome!
