Pittsburgh events – May 2017

April showers bring May flowers, so get outside and enjoy the springtime weather. Many events are starting up this month for the summer. It’s a great time to take advantage of the beautiful Pittsburgh outdoors!

Monday, May 1 – Outdoor Vinyasa Yoga

Try an outdoor yoga class in North Park! Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing, dynamic sequence of poses that involves synchronizing the breath with a continuous flow of postures. The fluid movements increase flexibility, strength, and stamina, as the practice calms the mind and improves overall health. Vinyasa flow yoga is the trifecta experience for mind, body, and spirit.

Tuesday, May 2 – Women’s Spring Bike Maintenance Workshop

Women of all skill levels will enjoy this demonstration-based workshop. Learn how to maintain your bike for smooth spring riding and build community with other Pittsburgh women! Learn what to wear, how to clean your bike, how to maintain the chains and brakes, and how to build a bike maintenance kit.

Wednesday, May 3 – Wednesday Walk

Socialize and get some exercise on Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s one- to two-mile walk in the neighborhood around the Woods Run branch. All ages and abilities are welcome (anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). Bring a water bottle for the walk. Walkers will meet at the front of the library. After the walk, please come in to the library for a healthy snack and a drink!

Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 – GNC Live Well Pittsburgh Health and Fitness Expo

Kicking off the Dick’s Sporting Goods Marathon Weekend is the exciting GNC Live Well Health and Fitness Expo. Numerous vendors will have products, goods, and services at this two-day event. Whether you are picking up your bib for race day, supporting family and friends, or just getting in the running spirit, there is something healthy for everyone!

Sunday, May 7 – Dick’s Sporting Goods Half-Marathon/Full Marathon Race

Game on, Pittsburgh! Be a RUNNER OF STEEL and join the thousands of runners who take on 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles through the city of Pittsburgh! A new flatter, faster course takes you past PNC Park, Heinz Field, Highmark Stadium, and PPG Paints Arena. With thousands of runners and spectators supporting you the entire way, you are sure to feel like a champion when you cross the finish line!

Sunday, May 7 – Riverfront Trail Ride 

Pittsburgh has bike trails along all three of its rivers! Join Venture Outdoors on this 12- to 15-mile ride. Experience the trails of downtown Pittsburgh and how to connect the trails smoothly. Expect a great tour of the city and its riverfronts with plenty of interesting stops along the way. Bike rentals are not available for this outing.

Sunday, May 7 – Bob Marley Flow

Join instructor Sean Conley and guest musician Kevin Paris for a special Bob Marley Flow! Sean will guide us through a soulful vinyasa as Kevin plays some of Bob Marley’s greatest hits. Let’s get together and feel alright!

Monday, May 8 – Beginner Paddle on the North Shore

Join Venture Outdoors in this Beginner Paddle Sessions. Start with instruction and practice, and then head onto the Allegheny River to see just how easy it is to paddle. Bedazzled by the gorgeous Pittsburgh skyline, you won’t even realize that you’re suddenly paddling like a pro!

Wednesday, May 10 – Yoga on the Lawn

Enjoy a slow-paced yoga flow class suitable for all levels. The practice will encourage students to connect their breath with movement and relieve tension in the body while flowing through postures that build strength and improve flexibility and balance. Unwind, quiet the mind, and destress while enjoying the beauty of the meditative outdoor setting at Hartwood Acres Mansion.

Wednesday, May 10 – Second Wednesday Meditation Group

Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or just a beginner, try this meditation practice session. Each session features an audio-guided meditation followed by silent meditation.

Thursday, May 11 – Neighborhood Hike, Homestead

What better way to see the city and stay fit than an evening hike exploring Pittsburgh’s quirky neighborhoods? Follow the sidewalks, staircases, and side trails as you wind four to six miles through different city neighborhoods.

Thursday, May 11 – 5-2-1-0 Speak Series: Screen Time – the Good and the Bad

Join Dr. Deborah Moss of UPMC and the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to learn about the latest recommendations for limiting screen time. Learn strategies for making screen-time decisions. Enjoy networking, food demos, and poster sessions! This event is free to attend; however, registration is required.

Saturday, May 13 – Yellow Creek Xtreme

Combine a triathlon with a scavenger hunt, and you get the Yellow Creek Xtreme adventure race at Yellow Creek State Park in Indiana County. Search for clues on foot, by mountain bike, or in a kayak/canoe. Whether you compete on your own or with a team, it’s literally an adventure to the finish line.

Saturday, May 13 – Fight for Air Climb

Take on the challenge of a vertical run: Climb either 23 or 46 flights of stairs at the Centre City Tower in downtown Pittsburgh for a unique exercise experience. Bonus for law enforcement and first responders: You get to register for a mere $10. 

Saturday, May 13 – Mud on the Mountain

Mud on the Mountain offers athletes a chance to get down and dirty atop the beautiful Laurel Highlands. The seven mile mud run course winds its way up, down and through some of the most challenging terrain in Pennsylvania. 

Sunday, May 14 – 25th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Join runners, walkers, families, and survivors in this iconic 5k. The course starts off at Flagstaff Hill in Oakland going through Squirrel Hill and into the heart of Schenley Park for a race that never gets boring. You’ll definitely be joining a lot of passionate people when you lace up for this run. 

Sunday, May 14 – Waterfall Hike

Hike 6-7 miles beside some of the most spectacular waterfalls and whitewater rapids that Pennsylvania has to offer! We’ll cover trails that will range from easy to difficult, talking about the history of the area along the way.

Sunday, May 14 – Candlelit Cardio Flow Power Hour

Cardio Flow Power Hour is 60 minutes of just that. We’ll forgo Sun B’s and long floor work and instead repeat and connect long sequences that will keep your heart rate up as you constantly flow in the candlelit warmth of the Lawrenceville studio. In this fast-paced power hour, we’ll break down three long sequences together before you flow through them on your own, matching the beat of the music to your breath and body movements. Goal: Leave feeling hot, sweaty and ready for the week ahead!

Friday, May 19 – Bike to Work Day

Whether you are a seasoned bike commuter or it’s your first day, join the thousands of people in Pittsburgh who bike to work!

Friday, May 19 – Yang To Yin Flow

Go deep, open, and energize yourself with this 90-minute yang to yin flow. Starting with a powerful vinyasa flow for the first half of class, we will end with a juicy 45-minute yin practice focusing on long, slow stretches on the floor.

Yin Yoga is the practice of long-held, deeply relaxing stretching poses that open and energize the body. Come end your week and begin your weekend feeling amazing.

Friday, May 19 – Fireworks Paddle

Take a leisurely paddle up the Allegheny River and float back down towards PNC Park in time for the fireworks show. Once the ball game is over, it is time to sit back, relax and marvel at the fireworks. Feel all the BOOMS and POPS vibrating the water from your front row seat. End time may run later if the baseball game goes into extra innings.

Saturday, May 20 – Bottoms Up! Yoga and Beer 

Enjoy an invigorating 75-minute yoga flow and reward yourself for your efforts with two tasters and a pint of Penn Brewery brews!

Sunday, May 21 – The Brian Demchak Hope Run 5K Walk/Run

New name but same great course! Take part in the 5K walk or run at UPMC St. Margaret. After the race, enjoy a “Taste of Fox Chapel” where local restaurants will competing for best food dishes — and you get to judge them!

Sunday, May 21 – Moraine Man Spring Sprint

Start with a quarter-mile swim in Lake Arthur, hop on the bike for a 14-mile ride around Lake View Beach, and end with a 5K around Moraine State Park. If swimming isn’t your thing, you can hit up the Spring Sprint’s duathlon, which is a 14-mile ride sandwiched between two three-mile runs. There’s also the AquaBike race or an adventure race, which substitutes the swim for a two-mile kayak trip!

Sunday, May 21 – Rock Climbing with Venture Outdoors

Imagine the feeling of using your own two hands and feet to pull yourself up the side of a cliff. Rock climbing is a popular outdoor sport great for strength and confidence building. Hike a short distance over easy terrain to reach the climbing areas. Experienced guides will teach you about equipment, safety, tying knots, how to rappel, belay and some climbing techniques. This class is perfect for beginners. All gear is included in the fee. The minimum age is 13.

Wednesday, May 24 – Wednesday Wake-Up Paddle

A Wednesday Wake-Up Paddle is a great way to start your day! This moderate paddle provides views of the sunrise over the city. The route and length varies weekly due to weather and river conditions. Previous paddling experience is required for this outing.

Friday, May 26 – Wise Walk

Be “smart” about fitness and take a walk around Oakland. Socialize and get some exercise on a one- to two-mile walk around the neighborhood. The Wise Walk program is geared toward those age 50 and older, but everyone is welcome.

Sunday, May 28 – Open Streets PGH

What if you could close a downtown street and use it for some healthy fun? Well, Pittsburgh did just that with Open Streets PGH! This year, Open Streets PGH runs from Market Square, over the Clemente Bridge, through the Northside, and ends in the West End. Walk, run, skate, bike, dance in the three-mile wide course that’s sure to have something for everyone!

Monday, May 29 – Yoga in the Square

Roll out your yoga mat in Market Square for a free yoga class! These hour-long yoga classes will take place every Sunday with 15 different local instructors! Sweat, breathe, and stretch into a relaxing Sunday morning!

Tuesday, May 30 – SUP Sunset Paddle

Take in the sunset from the water! Enjoy a relaxing paddle around North Park Lake and head back just in time to see the sunset over the Boathouse.
