Preventive Care: What’s included in your health insurance plan?

The easiest disease to treat is the one you never get. That’s why preventive care services are so important in your health insurance plan. So what exactly is included in preventive care? It can vary slightly from plan to plan, but we’ve outlined what you can expect from our UPMC Health Plans below. Remember, we cover preventive care services for children and adults at 100 percent, which means you won’t have a copayment or coinsurance for preventive care services when you see an in-network provider.

UPMC Health Plan Preventive Services

Screenings: We offer preventive screenings at every stage of life — from anemia and sickle cell tests for newborns, to colonoscopy and osteoporosis screenings for older adults. For a full listing of our screenings, click here.

Immunizations: We also cover vaccines as a preventive service for infants, children, and adults. These include influenza, varicella, hepatitis B, and hepatitis A, among many others. You can get your immunizations at a variety of health centers in your area, including pharmacies and clinics. View our recommended immunization schedule for adults and children here.

Health Exams: Did you know that as a member of UPMC Health Plan, you have access to a yearly general physical exam… for free? Annual physical exams are important; they help detect and prevent long-term health issues. We also cover preventive health exams for children, which include check-ups, as well as services like vision and hearing exams. Click here for a full list.

Preventive Services for Pregnant Women: Thinking about starting a family? We offer a wide variety of preventive services for pregnant women, including gestational diabetes screenings and breastfeeding counseling. Click here for a full list of our preventive services for pregnant women.
