Pittsburgh events – July 2017

Summer is here, and there is no shortage of active events throughout the Pittsburgh region, from hiking and biking to races and yoga! Explore Pittsburgh and its surrounding neighborhoods through a healthy perspective!

Saturday, July 1 — Waterfall Hike

Join Venture Outdoors on a hike beside some of the most spectacular waterfalls and whitewater rapids that Pennsylvania has to offer! You’ll cover trails in Ohiopyle State Park ranging from easy to difficult and talk about the history of the area along the way.

Sunday, July 2 — Yoga in the Square

Don’t plan anything for Sunday mornings this summer! Yoga in the Square returns for another beautiful, eye- and hip-opening flow in downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square. Pittsburgh’s yoga community will be out in full-force every Sunday from May 28 through September 24 (except Labor Day).

Tuesday, July 4 — Brentwood Firecracker 5K

What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than with a 5K race? Brentwood Firecracker 5K is one of the largest, longest running, and most popular 5K races in the area. It attracts families, elite athletes, spectators, and neighbors. Bring the whole family to celebrate and cheer!

Tuesday, July 4 — Fireworks Paddle

Enjoy Fourth of July fireworks from a front row seat with Venture Outdoors! Starting at 7 p.m., take a leisurely paddle upstream and, as the sun sets, float back down toward the Point to take your place in the front row for the best fireworks display in Pittsburgh! Previous paddling experience required.

Wednesday, July 5 — Green Market at Phipps

Refresh your lifestyle at this vibrant weekly market, bringing together community members, vendors, local artisans, and food producers for one of the greenest shopping experiences in town. Visit the front lawn to browse a colorful cornucopia of organic and sustainable goods from local vendors.

Wednesday, July 5 — TriAnglers Lunch Time Fishing

Everyone is welcome to come fishing with this weekly lunchtime fishing group. Celebrate Pittsburgh’s clean rivers and great fishing opportunities in downtown Pittsburgh with Venture Outdoors. Trip leaders will be on hand to help the novice and expert alike learn more about this great destination and possibly land a trophy catch. Equipment and bait are provided. A Pennsylvania fishing license is required for anyone 16 years of age and older.

Wednesday, July 5 — Sunset Yoga

Join in practice at sunset every Wednesday at South Side’s newest outdoor destination, Color Park. Conveniently located on the South Side Heritage Trail and accessible by foot, bike, or car, Color Park is powered by Studio AM, and Sunset Yoga is presented by The Hideout. Class starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. 

Saturday, July 8 — North Park Adventure

Have an adventurous day with Venture Outdoors and Lively Pittsburgh at North Park! During the outing, you’ll be led on a paddle, followed by lunch and a hike. Kayak rental and lunch are included in the registration fee.

Saturday, July 8 — Full Moon Paddle

Join Venture Outdoors for a lovely evening paddle along the Allegheny River. Head upstream and around Washington’s Landing while learning about the river and sites along its shore. Float downstream enjoying the city’s skyline as it shimmers on the dark water, and then look for the full moon as it peaks from behind downtown Pittsburgh high-rises. Previous paddling experience required.

Saturday, July 8 — ASCEND Grand Opening!

It has been a long time coming, but ASCEND is finally having its grand opening party! Expect games, competitions, and activities. Food trucks and local brews will be on-hand (and in-hand) too. And, of course, there will be climbing!

Sunday, July 9 — Beginner SUP Paddle

What’s SUP? Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. Begin with a short land-based instruction by Venture Outdoors trip leaders, who will have you gliding on the water in no time! This great full-body workout is perfect for all ages and levels of ability. Minimal physical conditioning is necessary, though participants should be comfortable in and on the water. The minimum age for participation is 13.

Sunday, July 9 — Ales and Oms @ Mindful Brewing

Join Yoga Flow at one of Pittsburgh’s newest breweries, Mindful Brewing in Castle Shannon, for a 45-minute flow set to music inspired by “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Expect a lighthearted practice and a 13 oz. beer waiting for you at the end.

Wednesday, July 12 — Beginner Bike Ride

Re-learn the basics of bicycling with this introductory outing from Venture Outdoors. The first half hour will cover tips, answer questions, and warm up for a successful bike trip. Afterward, you’ll ride as a group up to three miles, with occasional stops, along a flat trail. This program is part of the Senior Connections Initiative. Participants ages 50 and up can attend for free thanks to generous support from the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. Call the Venture Outdoors office to register and receive a promotion code to access this and other outings in the initiative.

Thursday, July 13 — #LunchLoop

Trade in your normal lunchtime routine and join BikePGH, Riverlife, and Healthy Ride for the third #LunchLoop. This 30-minute bike ride starts and ends in Market Square, with travel along downtown Pittsburgh’s beautiful bike lanes and riverfront trails. Rent a bike or bring your own!

Saturday, July 15 — Violet Rippy 5K

Run for a cause! Over 140,000 Americans have been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis (PF), and in most cases, there is no known cause for the disease. Sponsored by UPMC, all proceeds from this event will go to the University of Pittsburgh Dorothy P. and Richard P. Simmons Center for research, education, and awareness in the fight against PF.

Saturday, July 16 — Presque Isle Half Marathon

Run on the shores of Lake Erie at the Presque Isle Half Marathon! Enjoy stunning views on this one-lap trip around the lake course! It may be in the middle of summer, but the cool breeze of Lake Erie will keep you moving on this flat and fast course!

Tuesday, July 18 — Runners Night at PNC Park

Runners Night celebrates the running community in western PA. Presented by Fleet Feet Sports Pittsburgh, runners will get discounted tickets to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ game, visit the runner’s central on Federal Street before the game, and have a chance to run the bases after the game!

Saturday, July 22 — SUP Fitness Paddle

Taken the beginner class but looking for a faster-paced paddle? Want to get a good workout on the water? Then this is the outing for you! Join Venture Outdoors guides for a moderate-paced workout around North Park Lake. Previous SUP experience is required for these outings. The minimum age for participation is 13.

Saturday, July 22 — North Shore 5K Tour

There is plenty to see on the North Shore — from bridges to stadiums, there are fantastic views! The North Shore 5K Tour isn’t your traditional race. You get to learn about the North Shore and take plenty of photos on this flat and fun run!

Saturday, July 22 — Night Nation Run

If you don’t think music festivals are active enough for your tastes, why not take on the Night Nation Run? Yes, it’s back again and packed with all the neon, glow sticks, live DJs, selfie booths, and EDM music you’ve come to know and love. The run+party goes down in and around Stage AE on the North Shore.

Sunday, July 23 — Sunday Ride on the Trail: Montour Trail

Southwestern PA has many bike trails to explore. You will pedal 20 to 25 miles out and back along the Montour Trail. The trail follows towns, streams, farmland, and woods. Bring your lunch, as you’ll stop to eat along the way. Bike rentals are not available.

Sunday, July 23 — One Whirl Yoga Fest

Grab your yoga mat and join One Whirl Magazine and UPMC Health Plan at Point State Park for a day of yoga, fitness classes, health and wellness vendors, and more! Can’t make it on July 23? Get your yoga fix every Wednesday in Market Square from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. through September 27, featuring a different local yoga instructor each week. Every class is free!

Friday, July 28 — Liberty Mile

Don’t miss the Liberty Mile; it goes by in a flash. For some, this race takes under four minutes (these are the pros). But for us normals, we get to enjoy our time sprinting down two of Pittsburgh’s busiest streets: Penn and, of course, Liberty. The course is super flat too, so get ready to fly!

Friday, July 28 — Twilight Trail Walk

Join The Friends of the Montour Trail on the beautiful Montour Trail in McMurray — named the region’s 2017 Trail of the Year — for an evening walk, refreshments, and raffles. Included in the entry fee is a glow necklace to light your way along the trail. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome.

Saturday, July 29 — High Energy Hike

Get ready to move! Join Venture Outdoors for a brisk morning hike at Riverview Park! You’ll follow the winding paths of this beautiful city park, covering four to six miles at an advanced pace.

Saturday, July 29 — Healthy Family Day

UPMC Health Plan believes that healthy families are an important part of strong communities and will offer members 50 percent off admission for four to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. See the new Hands-On Harley-Davidson™ exhibit, and enjoy a full day of activities, games, and giveaways! Sunday, July 30 — Open Streets PGH

This is your last chance to experience Open Streets in 2017. The roads are closed to cars so you can run, bike, dance, and do yoga in the streets. July’s route includes 3.5 miles from Pittsburgh to Lawrenceville. So bust out your bike, running shoes, Rollerblades (oh yeah!), whatever, and get outside for this awesome event.
