According to the Pittsburgh Marathon’s website, more than 4,000 volunteers donate their time during race weekend.
Runners of Steel are not the only ones reaping the health benefits of the weekend — so are the volunteers! Volunteering is proven to provide health benefits. It can make you happier and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
The health benefits are both physical and mental. Physically, during the races you are standing, moving around, and getting your steps in! Mentally, volunteering is a pick-me-up, and can help reduce anxiety and depression. It can give you a sense of purpose and increase life satisfaction.
In addition to all the fun I will be having as I volunteer on May 7, I’ll be making myself healthier — and, according to research, adding years to my life!
